Toilet defects are the most commonly occurring household plumbing problems that we encounter in Irish homes. Mostly, these defects can be easily repaired if spotted quickly. Below, we look at some of the most common toilet problems along with their solution.

Bubbling Toilet Problem

If there are air bubbles in the water of a toilet bowl, even after flushing, don’t ignore them. The reason behind bubbling toilets is either faulty vents or a clogged toilet. Vents maintain pressure in the drain for efficient water flow. Improper venting causes air to back up and create a bubbling toilet.

Sometimes, the bubbling is caused by a blockage in the toilet drain. When a toilet is blocked it won’t flush either and may overflow if you try.

It is sometimes possible to use a plunger to unblock the toilet. Alternatively, plumbing snakes can be used to release any vent blockage. It is possible to buy drain snakes at local hardware stores but be prepared for a messy, and sometimes smelly, job.

Problem With The Flush Handle

The flush handle on toilets typically becomes either loose or stiff after a few years of regular use. When this happens, the toilet will stop flushing properly. This is because the metal arm that is linked to the toilet handle from within the cistern won’t be activated. Without the handle, the chain reaction that allows us to flush a toilet and have the cistern refill won’t work.

If the flush handle is the only problem and not the symptom of another problem, a replacement job is relatively quick.
