What To Consider When Replacing An Immersion

Tank Size and element – Immersion heater tanks (also known as the cylinder) vary in size depending on the property size and use. Tanks are mainly copper or steel and come with or without insulation.

The cost of a hot water tank depends on size, brand and type. A standard tank starts at under €200. Some tanks cost up to, or even more than, €1000. However, rest assured that at 24 Hour Plumber, we are dedicated to making sure that your immersion hot water tank heater is replaced with one that suits your home, needs and your budget.

Element – Inside your immersion tank is an element. In many ways, an immersion is like a giant kettle. When you flick the on immersion switch, the element which looks much like the one in your kettle heats up and warms the water in the tank. Some immersions have two elements, positioned one above the other, but most have one.

Immersion elements vary in size and fitting but all work in the same way. The cost for an element typically starts at around €40 and can go anywhere up to three or four hundred.

Insulation – For tanks that don’t have built-in insulation, for example, standard copper or steel tanks, a cylinder jacket is recommended. These fibreglass filled jackets fit snugly around your tank to keep the water hotter for longer. Cylinder jackets are low cost and will stop the need to reheat water as often. Since they keep your water hotter longer, tank insulators can help you save money on bills too.

Is It Time To Replace Your Immersion?

Immersions are made to serve the average household for a good few years. When it does come time to replace your immersion, you may notice a few telltale signs.

Have your electric bills suddenly gone up?

As an immersion comes to the end of its life it becomes less efficient.  A spike in your energy bills could be a sign that your immersion is ready to be replaced.

Is your hot water scalding hot?

If your hot water becomes scalding hot without any changes to the immersion thermostat, call a plumber. This is a definite sign that something is wrong with the immersion heater. Be careful if there are young children or pets in the home, as scalding water can cause serious injury.

Is your water not as hot as it used to be?

Having hot water that no longer seems as hot as it was is another indication of a faulty immersion.
